My Uptime - 12 hours :p
Do you pay your electricity bill?
Also that is one sure way to fry your Mac. Power surge can happen at any time.. Do you really trust those $100 surge boards for 24/7 use or do you have UPS.
Also think of how much dust gets in there...
Not smart to leave your computer on 24/7.
Unless you are completely unplugging your computer when it's not in use, just turing it off doesn't really protect it from power surges.

I am looking to share some photos and get a blog online and I can't decide what the best way to do this would be. I appolagize for the long post but I am trying to be thorough in giving you my thinking my thinking. I'll try to be organized to make up for it.
Background:
Next year I am going to be studying abroad in Europe for two semesters and would like to tell people back home in the states how things are going. I have minimal html/webpage experience, limited time to learn stuff and mess around with it and and money is tight. I have also never done any blogging before and am very unlikely to make good use of it.
Usage/what I am looking for:
1)A simple blog to tell family and friends (that includes you guys if you want) how things are going and about any adventures I might have.
2)Host a couple hundred pictures, organized in albums, for people to look at and have them available to download at full resolution, taken with a 5mp camera. My mom is big on pictures so this is mostly for her, she also likes to print them which is why they need to be full rez.
3) Easy to navigate. The audience for this will be several computer illiterite people and some on 56k modems so posted pictures need to be thumbnails with links to the originals.
4) Easy to deploy. I have a full coursload at school, a job and something resembling a social life so I I don't have hours to update it (initial settup can be slow as I don't need it up an running for a month or two).
5) CHEAP, in fact free unless I think there is no possible other way.
My options: These are the possiblities that I have been considering.
1) The ultimate solution would be something like fotki.com as it has photo hosting/printing/linking and a journal all on one website with an easy interface. However it costs $50 a year and that is more than I can afford.
2)Get things from separate places. Get a blog like blogger (http://www.blogger.com) and find someplace to host pictures, maybe one of those online printing places like Snapfish so that I get unlimited free storage.
3) Make my own website. Here I have two sub options.
a) I have 100Mb of non scriptable webspace on a webdav server through my university that I could use. Picture storage would be limited but that might be ok.
b) I have a Digital Audio G4 tower running Panther that I currently use as a printserver. I could easily demilitarize it on our router and use something like no-ip to access it. Pros being unlimited completely customizeable space, cons being it is more work and I will not have physical access to it when over seas so if something goes wrong it will be vary hard to fix because I would have to talk one of my family trough fixing it.
The ability to download in full rez is probably the least important as I can find other ways of getting those to my mom.
So, what would you do in my situation, remember time and money are the deciding factors here, don't have much of either. Any feedback is greatly appriciated.

The HTML is fully valid, i tried it on a couple old dells and it worked on there IE6 so i am assuming it was a problem with the multi ie installation i have on my vm.
I also have IE6 running on a XP machine that I keep around just for checking some web sites on it. It is a system install not a VM. I checked your link at http://cabbit.co.uk/public/demo/ and it appeared to be OK as well.

Do this. Check out OWC or Newegg.
Ok, so lets say I go with 3rd party memory. If I have an unrelated problem with the MBP, would I need to put the original memory back in before taking it in for service?
I'm new to the whole Mac thing. Thanks.

Photoshop on its own will not OCR text. Really, what you're trying to do could skip the imaging stage until the end when you're batch-processing the image files to be psds or whatever.
Assuming that Photoshop's batch processing tools under File>Automate>Batch will not produce the filenames you need, I'd look at it first of all as a workflow that first needs to parse a text file and produce blank image files in those names, even PDFs could work, the size and format is irrelevant.
Once that's done, it's a simple matter of setting up a Photoshop action to format those images to the correct dimensions, colour spaces, layers etc and then batch processing all those files into another folder.

Most bi-OS folks use a native Windows backup as their primary line of defense and run that within Windows. (The W7 backup is fairly decent).
What we are talking about here is really imaging/cloning while booted to OS X, which can be useful in cases like the OPs where they may want to resize the Windows partition.
If you use Parallels or Fusion with a non-shared (Boot Camp) VM, they VM is just a file and gets backed up with your regular Mac OS X backups. The VM software alos allows you to make "snapshots" of the VM as another level of backup. You lose that ability in a shared Boot Camp/VM install of Windows.
So if you don't need full access to the hardware, stick with a VM-only install for the most flexibility.
B
i run Maya, Nuke, and Adobe CS5 in Windows 7 Boot Camp, so i definitely need full access to the hardware. so if i am working in Windows via Boot Camp, i can backup my files with Windows Backup, but its not actually making a bootable copy/clone of Windows, right?
what i'm looking for is the ability to make a clone of my Boot Camp partition just like i do with my OSX partition. i'd like it so that if i had to replace the hard drive my Boot Camp partition is on, i can just copy the (clone/image/bootable backup) back to the new hard drive.

This is a total wild shot, but you're sharing your iTunes library over the network, right? It appears to be trying to make domain name accommodations for your iTunes library. I'm not sure if that's standard operating procedure or not, but it seems strange to me. Try turning that off temporarily and seeing if you get the same keyboard lock?
If you don't, then perhaps it has something to do with the way iTunes sharing is set up... if not, it was a wild goose chase. Sorry. :(
Oh, and at this point, if you haven't already, do just repair permissions for the heck of it. You never know.

I would like to see a Duel drive raid TC with user replaceable drives and a better cooling solution . So far I have had one fail between 8 and 14 months old since they launched , and it's sat on a low shelf in an open to air on all sides unit PSU failure every time, capacitors burst.
They are very very poor design from a heat dissipation standpoint . I'd prefer a next gen one to go with a MagSafe replaceable PSU

Am I missing something? I get an email everytime someone replies to a thread I've posted in.
Now what would be nice is if that email had a link to the thread on the regular site and for the mobile site.
No an email of someone replying to a comment you left in a thread. Not someone who replies to a thread.
For example you read a thread someone posted and you have a question. So you leave your question within that persons thread. There would be people who would quote your question and answer it. You then get a email of those people who quoted and answered your question.
Being subscribed to a thread that you left a question on is too much work to always look at all the replies people left to the thread as your waiting for a reply to your comment.
Sometimes I don't want to waste my time reading the hundreds of comments after my comment and most likely interested only if someone quoted my comment.
So what would be nice is an option, when subscribing to a thread, to either receive an email every time someone comments to a thread OR someone quoting your comment and replying to it..

I would kinda like to find a website where flame wars were cherished, trolls were honored, and bitter insults were extolled.
Of course, I appreciate and enjoy the close community that has formed here too much to want MacRumors to be that site, but I would like my occassional craving for flaming to be satisfied somewhere.
http://www.adequacy.org/ !
And, as much as I hate to say it, http://www.kuro5hin.org/ is full of jerkish trolls. *sigh*
PS: What do you have against Best Buy?

Wasn't this already known? My (somewhat) fuzzy memory seems to recall that Time Team were there for 6 summers and found this, along with a ceremonial route, evidence of many, many structures (wooden and stone) and lots and lots of human remains in the immediate area surrounding Stonehenge.

Those are interesting but I am not sure that's what I need. I just want to send a monthly email to people with updates. To whoever adds their email to my mailing list....but I'd like that list to be compiled automatically from the main page on my site where they input the email address...I thought maybe I could do it with php
